Some patients are simply not happy with their smile. They have whitened their teeth, when they were younger they may have had orthodontic treatment, and they work hard to keep them clean and stain-free. However, when it comes right down to it, they may still not be pleased with their smile. They may be frustrated. They are not sure where to turn.
I can tell you right here that for most all situations there are options. Some options may include orthodontic treatment again. Some options may include replacing failing dental fillings and restorations. Some options may include re-shaping of teeth. However, for some, porcelain veneers may be the game changer.
Porcelain veneers have the ability to change the shape, color, lengths, and sizes of teeth. Some patients may want a stark Hollywood type of change. Other patients want a definite improvement yet one that does not scream of a change; these patients want to enhance their smile without looking too fake or too Hollywood, shall we say. We can compare the changes to restoring the bust-line of a woman who has had to deal with a double massectomy; does she want a similar bust-line as prior to cancer, or does she want a significant enhancement? This analogy carries over to the teeth with porcelain veneers as well. With your dentist, you can decide how much of a change is going to be done. In these images above, the front upper six teeth were treated with veneers. All the other teeth were better served with ceramic crowns. Each case presents its own plan of care after consideration of many factors.
So, with an evaluation by a reputable dentist, you and your dentist can decide the best plan. Should the plan feature porcelain veneers, then the decisions can be made concerning the goals of treatment. You do want your dentist to evaluate your oral condition prior to initiating care. There are multiple things to be considered prior to starting care. If your dentist wants to move from a consultation straight to starting preparations for veneers right away, you may want to consider obtaining a second opinion. You do want your oral condition to be thoroughly evaluated prior to starting any treatment.
If you already have a dentist you can discuss this with, then start there. However, in other cases, when selecting a dentist, I would consider discussing this with friends who may have received cosmetic dental services. You may also want to search online for reviews. In our case, I have been fortunate enough to have earned wonderful reviews from patients, from doctors, as well as awards from an online community of patients and doctors who communicate through questions and answers, and the critiques of those answers.
