Yes, yes, yes! Root canals are safe. Yes I know that rumors are discussed nearby coffee makers and water coolers. I know the Internet has information to the contrary. I would bet you can find two sides to any argument on the Internet. The truth is not found on the Internet. The truth is found by well-controlled and designed research.
It is true that there has been debate upon this subject. I also realize that it has become popular to undermine doctors and medical practice. There are remedies and alternative medicine protocols all over the place. Just because something “works” for perhaps one person does not mean that there was no other factor that may have contributed to something “working”. Just because something doesn’t “work” for one person does not mean that there was no other factor that may have contributed to something not “working”. Do you see what I am saying? That is why well-controlled and well-designed research is necessary. These research studies make sure that no other factors are in play.
So again, I know what you may hear about root canals. I know what you may have seen on TV or on the Internet. However, clearly, we see all kinds of stuff on TV and the Internet. There is freedom to post or show anything in this country. This is a double-edged sword.
Also, yes, we do perform these procedures within my dental office. We take the extra steps needed to make sure that the root canal needs to be done in the first place. Then, should the root canal procedure be needed, we use techniques and materials that are proven and well-documented as safe and effective. Moreover, there was a time in my training when I considered being a root canal specialist, an endodontist, because I enjoyed performing them. These procedures are done very well here.
